Rules apply to the 21km and 10km races

Licences and race numbers

• The official race number must be worn unaltered on the FRONT of the participants vest.
• Licensed runners must wear club colours and their 2012 licence number on the back of their vests. Clubs must be affiliated to ASA.
• Unlicensed runners must wear a temporary licence on the back of their vests. It will be included in their race package.

Age categories

• Entrants for the 21km must be at least 16 years of age on race day.
• Entrants for the 10km must be at least 15 years of age on race day.

General rules

• The races are run according to the rules of WPA and ASA.
• Personal seconding will not be allowed.
• Water and coke tables will be situated approximately every 3km along the race route.
• Age group ID tags must be worn on the back and front of vests of athletes competing for category prizes.
• Age category tags may be purchased at registration.
• Participants may enter the age category corresponding to their chronological age or any younger category down to senior.

Prizes

• In addition to open prizes, participants will only be eligible for an age category prize in the age category they enter. Corresponding numerical age category tags must be worn on the front and back of the vest.
• Temporary licensed participants are eligible for age category prizes provided they enter the relevant age group, wear the appropriate age tag and provide proof of age.
• Juniors (born 1993 or later) must wear ‘J’ tags to qualify for age group prizes.
• Juniors will count towards the senior team prize.
• Club colours must be worn to qualify for team prizes.
• Participants will qualify for age category team prizes based on the individual age category they enter (with corresponding age category tags). Older participants qualify for a younger team only if there is no team competition for their specific age category.

This year, The Gun run will offer category prize winners a share of R58, 300. In addition, all runners will also stand a chance of winning some juicy lucky draw prizes, but you must be present to claim your prize. Prize giving will start at 10:30.

This year sees the introduction of timing chips to the Half Marathon only. This follows the trend towards using this technology in mass participation events and ensures speedy and accurate timing. The RaceTec system, as used at the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon and many Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tours, has been selected.

If you already own a RaceTec chip, enter your chip number on the entry form. If you do not own a RaceTec chip, you MUST purchase one when you enter the Gun Run Half Marathon. Chips are available for R80 (normally R110) and you collect your chip with your race number at registration. You can use your unique chip for this and future timed events which use the RaceTec system. For a list of the many events using the RaceTec timing system, visit www.racetec.co.za.

If you have already purchased a RaceTec chip but have not yet received it (for example, you have entered the 2012 Cape Argus Pick ‘n Pay Cycle Tour and have ordered a RaceTec chip), you DO NOT need to purchase a new chip for the Gun Run. When entering, please indicate that you have purchased a chip but have not yet received it. RaceTec will be on hand at number collection to ensure that you receive the chip that you have already purchased.

Your chip must be positioned vertically (not horizontally) on your shoe laces in order to be read over the timing mats. NB: you MUST wear your RaceTec chip when you run the Gun Run Half Marathon; if you fail to wear your chip, you will NOT be listed as an official finisher or receive an official time. You will also NOT qualify for prize money or have your participation added to your race history.

Chips are NOT required for the 10km and 5km events.

Half Marathon Entry Fees

Entries for the 2012 Gun Run close in September and NO late entries will be accepted. However, 5km runners can also enter on the day. Number collection is compulsory for all participants (21km, 10km and 5km) who pre-enter.

Please indicate CLEARLY on your entry form where you will be collecting your number. No registration and number collection will take place on race day EXCEPT for 5km runners who enter on the day.

NB: No number collection, upgrades/downgrades or substitutions on race day, except 5km participants who enter on the day (only 5km participants may enter on the day).

There are various parking options available for this year’s event. Participants are advised to get to the start early and to make use of the parking options listed below. Participants are requested to not park in any residential parking bays in the apartments surrounding the Stadium and to not park illegally as vehicles will be towed.

PLEASE NOTE: The Traffic Department will clamp, fine and tow away any illegally parked vehicles, particularly along Western Boulevard. Please adhere to all parking signs and restrictions.

1. V&A Waterfront:

Safe, secure parking is available at the V&A Waterfront at a cost of R10 for up to 5 hours. Enter the parking just below the BMW Pavilion and from there it’s a short warm up jog or walk to the start in Fritz Sonnenberg Road.

2. Cape Quarter

Safe, secure parking is available at the Cape Quarter Shopping Centre in Somerset Road for R5 for the whole day. What a great deal and it’s a warm up walk or jog of less than 1km to the start.

3. Main Road Green Point

There’s loads of free parking in the area between Western Boulevard and Main Road Green Point, as well as along Main Road, Green Point. Please park legally to avoid clamping or being towed. It’s just a short jog across to the start from here.

4. Green Point A Track (opposite McDonalds)

A small parking area is available here.

5. Green Point Flea Market

NO PARKING will be permitted here as vendors will be operating on the day.
